kcreatives photography: life and hope

Life and Hope

Sometimes you have a dream in your head.  And sometimes that dream stays just that – a dream.  And sometimes you have a friend that helps that dream become a reality.

This girl is that friend.  And this photo shoot is that dream.  The location may have changed at the very last minute, but everything else about it was picture perfect.

Life and Hope

IMG_0257.CR2

When death happens in a person’s life – it can be death of a close relative, loved one, friend, or death of a dream, or relationship, or job offer, or life may just seem hopeless…there is devastation all around us – and sometimes there is devastation in us…sometimes we are lost…aimless..hopeless.

This shoot brought the story of Jesus and Lazarus to life for me.  Jesus was profoundly moved by the death of his friend.  Laz wasn’t just some random person – he was a close friend to Jesus.  And Jesus came and wept.  He showed empathy toward other friends and family that were there – but he was deeply moved at that moment.  The thing he knew was that there was purpose and healing and restoration coming from his death.  Jesus has the power to bring life, beauty, freedom out of death.

You may be facing death in your life: cancer, illness, loss of hopes and dreams, loss of a relationships – but what good is all of it.  We don’t know. I don’t know.  But Jesus knows.  He alone brings life and hope and beauty and freedom.  Right out of a graveyard.  A stinky, smelly graveyard offers a beautiful sunrise on a new, fresh morning!

Then we look and see Jesus – even among the death around us.  There is Hope.  There is Life.  There is freedom and beauty.  There is future.  That’s what this photo shoot helps to represent.  I love everything about this photo shoot.  I hope to do more of them in the future.

Pursuit Atlanta Little River Wedding

Holland Daze Flowers

I’m encouraged to be a part of Pursuit Community ATL, a city group of Pursuit Community, which is a group of ladies who love Jesus, community and creative ventures.  In August, on a misty rainy day, I drove up to the Alpharetta area and pulled into this breathtaking sweet venue tucked by some water and greenways.  Little River Farms is a sublime venue for an indoor or outdoor wedding – the grounds are just as pretty as the light, window-filled place that sits on the land. Sweet Luisa and her husband had just celebrated their one year anniversary. Such a treat to shoot this couple. They make shooting weddings easy!

Since this was a styled shoot, we had the best of the best wedding vendors from around the ATL metro area

Coffee With Lindsey Hohman Designs

Lindsey Hohman Designs

Watching people who are really great at what they do do what they do – it excites me!  And I want to introduce you to one of those people.

Lindsey Hohman.  I met Lindsey while we were both getting pedicures at a spa night hosted by her sister-in-law.  I immediately was connecting with her down-to-earth personality and her creative bent toward everything.  This girl has so much creativeness that it oozes out the ends of her hair.

You can see it in everything she does and her style fits her home perfectly.  When I left her home a few days ago I called my husband and told him I found our dream house.  No joke.  Gray, white, lots of light, hydrangeas, plenty of space, a huge back yard, a rocking chair front porch, Gator stuff in the house.  Yup.  I hope this girl keeps me as a friend!

Chalkboard Lettering

Lindsey is a handletter-er genius and it flows from her.  I wish I could do it – and I can’t.  We all have our gifts.  Apparently.  But, I love her whimsical style of writing and her soft style of watercolor.  I love her floral looks but it doesn’t make everything too girlie.  She is authentic.  She loves Jesus, the Bible, and the Gospel.  She uses an ESV Journaling Bible.  She has two really cute kids.  She loved my food.  Yup.  She’s a winner.

Coffee with Lindsey Hohman

Our kids played, we ate and talked, and she was kind enough to answer some questions so you can get to know her a bit.

First, the question every one will want to know, what is in your coffee cup?  Sweetness.  Hazelnut coffee with french vanilla creamer.  Stevia for more sweetness.  If its not sweet, I’m not drinking it.

What are you learning from your art?  I’m learning to view God in the light of grace.  I am getting out of the box of “I need to do this before I will be ______”  Living in grace and not living in law.

“Its a challenge to see you how God sees you.” – LH

What’s one area as a business creative in which you want to grow?  I need to work on my shop set-up.  Learning which avenues are best for which art styles.

What are your favorite materials?  I love being creative with paints and pens and chalk. I like manipulating them in different ways to get a different effect.

Watercolor Flowers

What inspires your creativity?  LOTS.  I am a visually-inspired person.  I love pretty things.  Magazine and Pinterest lend inspiration.  I love to sketch and doodle.  If I’m listening to someone talk, I’m usually doodling.  Watercolor is a new medium.  One thing I’m learning is you can’t base your creations on others’.  A lot of my inspiration comes from magazines and other print work. I love taking time to sit alone a read through a magazine!

How do you balance being a wife and a mom and a creative?  Inclusion and patience.  Basically, multitasking.  I can’t do just one of the other.  I am always Mommy and _____.

Mommy and Creative

Lindsey, thank you so much for hanging out with me. I look forward to future play dates, cupcake dates, and creative sessions with you.

Little toes. Little noses.  Little fingers.  Lots of laughs and pokes and sweet, tender moments from older siblings. Lots of wonder and amazement from tired but grateful parents.

Newborn shoots are a really sweet time to spend with a new family – maybe been a family for a while – but with the addition of each child, each special creation, a new family emerges.

I got to spend an evening with a sweet family in our church.  Baby was quite awake even with a full belly.  Perfect lighting outside and eager siblings made it for a fun, eventful evening.

kcreatives newborn : baby M

I love doing a newborn shoot with a really good friend.  I’ve known Tasya since we cheered for the same school in high school.  We got reconnected because of the joyful thing called social media about a decade ago.  That was before either of us were dating our now husbands, and of course neither of us had kids.

I couldn’t wait to meet baby M – and even though that meeting took a little longer, I still got to meet him, hold him, and capture him in all of his sleepy cuteness.

Photography Friday

Happy Friday!  So thankful the weekend is here.  My husband has Sunday off and we are having some friends over so that will be fun cooking for them (especially a French Silk Pie for the first time)!  Have you ever made French Silk Pie?  What is your favorite type of pie?

I’ve been dabbling in photography for about 7 years now ever since I went on a hiking trip with two of my photographer friends.  It was lifechanging – even though I’d been taking photos since high school.  They were both more advanced in their photography knowledge and I wanted to learn all I could.  Over the years different things have been more important than that, but I’m finally biting the bullet and starting my photography business.  You can see some of the shoots I’ve done in the past by clicking here.

On Fridays, I want to make some great links available to you – ones that I am learning from.  Some weeks I will do an interview with friends who are photographers. I hope these links and interviews challenge you to be better in your craft.

Always learning with you – kdc

A new to me friend Jenna from DiPrima Photography is starting a new series on basics of DSLR for those of you just beginning.

I love it when talented and busy photographers spend some of their time teaching people who read their blogs more about how to excel in photography.  KJ of Virginia does this well.

Since I also love to take photos of food – here is one of my favorite food blogs and they share tips on food photography.

The Cooks Maternity

A beautiful park and a beautiful Fall day and a beautiful Momma and her family – made this a wonderful first maternity photo shoot for me.  Thanks Jennifer for not having baby Cook yet and for sharing your life and family with me.  Will be looking forward to meeting you cute new son and bringing you macaroni and cheese – because we know that that meal makes all things better!

My prayers to our faithful God for knitting your baby beautifully and for protection over the next few days or weeks.  And strength – can’t forget strength!

Faces: Sibling Love

One of the pleasures of getting married is the chance to automatically have a larger family.  Before the mister and I tied the knot, we had the chance to go visit his aunt and uncle who live in Colonial Williamsburg.  We had a blast.  We both love to travel, eat, and admire history, and his aunt and uncle were gracious hosts and very hospitable.

Almost three years later, here we are in the Atlanta area, and that same aunt and uncle – their son, daughter-in-law, and grandson and daughter live in the same city we do.  They’ve been a gracious welcome wagon for us and we look forward to more time spent with them.

The boys and I had the pleasure of hanging out in the Marietta Square with them this past week.  E is about to lose her first teeth, so we had to capture that pretty smile beforehand.  These pictures were fun, followed by a chaotic lunch at Taqueria Tsunami (for an amazing Korean BBQ quesadilla and their stellar made-to-order guacamole).  I hope you enjoy some of the moments I was able to capture.

Faces: Happy First Birthday Sweet Girl

Elysa Grace

Friends…life is much sweeter with friends.  This sweet girl’s momma and I were friends in seminary, I attended her parents’ wedding, and now, all these years later, we are living next door to each other.  Sharing life.  Sharing celebrations.

This family was in Florida for E. G.’s actual birthday but we are celebrating today by taking her first year portraits.

First birthday celebration

One of the great aspects I love living in the Atlanta Metro area is the lovely green spaces all over it.  Yes, traffic is a mess.  But, if you can traverse the traffic jams you get to the beautiful grounds of all these parks.  East Cobb park is one of them.  Only about 4 miles from us, it is a joyous place for our children to play together.

Sugar and Spice

Here’s to so many more sweet years Elysa – enjoy the new found joys and experiences of toddler-hood!

Rocking Chair and Pearls

Red hair.  I have it, but not as vibrant as this sweet darling.  She is the spittin’ image of her momma and has rosy cheeks and eyes that twinkle that light up any room she is in.  I had a lovely time catching her playing with her pearls, rocking in a chair, staring at the lake, or being held by her mother.  Baby A – may life hold many wonders for you as you grow to be a woman who loves the Lord and lives life to the fullest.
