Young Moms, Care for Your Souls

Young Moms Care for Your SoulsGood morning young moms. If you are any like me this morning, you are coming off a night of little rest, or a day that was very hectic yesterday. I hope that this post is an encouraging read to you – in what might be a trying and busy time.
Let me talk about the title before we get started, please. Young Moms – this post is written to any mother, no matter her age, and no matter the age of her kids. Because I’ve learned that parenting trials don’t stop when your young ones start sleeping through the night! Can I get an Amen?!
Care For Your Souls – by this I am talking about more than just your spiritual side, although that is most important. God created our souls, but he also created the rest of us, too. He created our physical bodies as well as giving us a personality, hobbies, desires, etc.
And one last thing…if you are married and doing this parenting thing together, please talk about this with your husband, just as I have done with mine on numerous occasions. Let him hear your needs and how you are doing – where you are struggling, what your joys and fears and hobbies are. Then see if any of these ideas (or any that have been stirred in you by reading this post) would be able to work for your family.
Here we go:
1. Take time each day to read the Word. I don’t mean long drawn out times in the Word (for this first one). I mean doable, short times where you can focus your thoughts on the Word of God – our center. This may mean different times or places depending on the age of your children. You may have to take a longer shower and listen to the Word read as you take one. You may have to keep a Bible on the back of the toilet to read. You may do it while waiting in the car at a practice of one of your children or in the carpool line. You may read it in the quiet of your bedroom while the rest of the house is still quiet. You may read it on your iphone as you are feeding your newborn (which is what I often do). Wherever and whatever time – read the Word.
2. Take longer times to meditate on the Word. What has worked well for us is on Friday mornings, my husband’s day off, I go to Panera and spend time in the Word, journaling prayers for him, writing my thoughts on some passages I’ve read, or reading devotional books. Whatever helps you practice more of the art of meditation – longer times thinking about what you have read. Please do it.
3. Retreat. Maybe there is a women’s retreat at your church or a church nearby. Maybe you go away with a mentor or a dear friend and just spend time recharging for the wknd. Our church had a women’s retreat. This spring there is a women’s retreat at another church in town. For my last birthday, my husband sent me away on a beach wknd with my mentor. We spent time in the Word, time journaling, but also time just eating, conversing, walking around, looking at trees and sitting by the beach.
4. Exercise. I honestly think that this goes a lot further than just slimming your waist line. Many moms I know, no matter how old their children are, want to lose weight, tone up, run longer, have more energy, etc. Exercising can help with all of that. After having two babies in two years, I desperately need to work on this one this year. But, it also is very refreshing. When I am out walking at Two Rivers or doing a power yoga video while the children are asleep – it helps my focus, my stamina, and gives me energy for the rest of the day. And it helps my jeans fit better or that special dress for date night! God delights when we take care of our bodies as He created them to be.
5. Spend alone time with your husband. There was hopefully more reasons you got married than just to have children, though that is an awfully cute reason! Go out on dates. Set aside budget money to hire babysitters or pay for these little dates. Plan in-home date nights for chilling together once the kids are asleep. One of our faves is having popcorn that my husband pops (jerk seasoning and fresh cracked pepper) and an NCIS episode (we are just starting season 10).
6. Hang out with other Moms. Most of my girlfriends, whether close or far away, are new moms. Or newish moms. Hang out with these Moms, have play dates, have mom day out groups that take turn watching the children. But, also hang out with veteran moms. They can encourage you to press on!
7. Enjoy a hobby. I love to read, write, and do photography. So, I spend time blogging and writing when the children are asleep (or laying here laughing in front of me on the bed, kicking the ipad). Or I read in bed before I crash at night. Or I read them a book while we are playing upstairs. I will take my camera with me wherever we go – so if I see pretty nature or smiles on my boys’ faces I can capture the moment! What are your hobbies? Knitting, card making, cooking special desserts – do them! Use nap times wisely, or try to get an hour or so when your husband is home so you can do these things you enjoy. I really think God desires us to find our Joy in Him but he gives us great gifts like hobbies to thank him and give our joy back to him.
8. Get coffee. Ok – sometimes we just need time to stare blankly off into space. Sometimes you need someone to come watch your children just so you can drink caffeine and do nothing. Oh, what a blessing this is! I encourage you to do it. Whether it’s coffee, teas, smoothies, a cookies, etc. Allow yourself some times like this.
9. Take a shower. My husband knows that one of the things I do mostly at night now is take a shower. Showers are very recharging and relaxing to me – but not when I’m concerned about hearing kids crying. So, I wait until my husband is home and our oldest is in bed for the evening. I probably waste too much water, but it allows me a time to breathe!
10. Love on your children. Say yes to them, instead of no all the time. Tickle them. Hold them up and laugh with them. Go play on a playground with them. This is a grand thing – hearing an infant laugh!

What would you add to this list? How do you care for your souls?

2014 Goals: Photography

2014 Photography Goals

Such a great habit. As we’ve recently taken photographs and have realized how expensive they are – I definitely want to improve this hobby for a few reasons:
1. Watching my boys grow. I love seeing all the pictures even from last year. They are such precious creations and it is a joy to watch them grow.
2. Capture families, food, and God’s creation. I love taking photos of love and families. Whether engaged couples, families big or small, new or many generations old, babies who have just entered the word. I also love taking pictures of the food I make. It is a fun creative outlet to plate food. I also love taking photos of God’s creation. It is amazing to see a sunset and capture dew drops on rose petals.

Here are a few ways I’m going to do this:
1. Hopefully get people who will want me to photograph them.
2. Make a light box. This is a joint task with my husband.
3. Read my camera manual.
4. Read a food styling and photography book that my parents got me several years ago for Christmas.
5. Take photos.
6. Continue to read other photographer’s blog. One new one I enjoy is Amanda Lackey.
7. Hang out with other photographers.
8. Live life.

2014 Goal: Encourage

Encouragement Project 2014

Bubbles. Sprinkles. Confetti. Cards. Pink. Balloons. Flowers.
I read a blog from a friend of mine that focuses a LOT on showing kindness, being encouraging, etc. – it is uplifting and encourages me to share kindness with other people.
Scripture tells us to show kindness to strangers, be hospitable, share encouraging words, and show the love of Christ to the world. How do we do that?
The past two years have had a lot of discouragement in them for me. So, as I embark on 2014, I want to be the one who encourages others. I received the above card from a sweet friend of mine for my birthday – but why do we need to just tell people encouraging things on their birthday? Why can’t we be an encouragement to others every day of the year?
Here is what I’m not saying: Never speak the hard truth to others. I am not saying live in fairy tale land. But, here is what I’m saying: Go above and beyond to be an encourager instead of the discourager.
1. Encourage your husband. Instead of harping on the one thing he doesn’t do for you – encourage him in all the other ways that he serves you and your family.
2. Encourage your children. Even if they are young, encourage them in ways they show kindness to their siblings, or how they exhibit a godly characteristic.
3. Encourage your neighbor, friend, or someone in your church. For me, snail mail is so important. I love sending cards and letters and little care packages to friends. This goes for any age person!
4. Encourage strangers. Pay for the car behind you in the Starbucks line. Be kind to the cashier or salesperson – many folks who shop aren’t nice.
5.  Encourage bloggers.  If you read blogs, one of the best ways to encourage the bloggers to keep doing what they love is by seeing comments.  So, tell them how much you enjoyed their blog!

In a world that offers much discouragement, be the encourager in your world. How creative can you be in sharing encouragement?

Knowing God in the OT: Week 1

God is...

This year I am working my way through the Old Testament.  How did this goal come about?

I was driving on I-40, listening to an Andrew Peterson song with a ton of names.  I thought to myself all of those people knew God somehow.  They all had an encounter with God.  I wanted to know more about that God.

So, I am reading through an OT reading plan.  With each day I’m jotting down my thoughts, and what I learn about God, who He is.  By the end of they year I plan to take photos, quotes from reading, journal thought and compose an ebook out of it.  I am looking forward to this journey.

Each week I will share a snippet with you.  I hope you enjoy.

1.  God is a seeking God.

2.  God is a faithful God.

3.  God is the sustainer and giver of all of life.

4. God is extravagant

5. God makes covenants with us.

Return to Rest

Recover from the Holidays

One of the most dreaded parts of the holiday season (Thanksgiving until my birthday) is the amount of traffic that is created.  I love living in metropolitan areas – but I’d rather do anything than fight busy intersections and crowded shopping malls.

What is it about the holiday season that raises our blood pressure, turns highways into crowded parking lots, and makes doing errands almost unbearable?

Something we DON’T DO: we don’t rest.

We strive.

We plan too much.

We go too often and too fast.

We don’t take time.

We don’t REST.

This goes not only for our physical activity, but also for our spiritual activity.  We seldom take time to enjoy the Christmas season and all that it entails.  Even if we go to Christmas Eve services, we are rushed getting in shopping and huge family meals with lots of cooking before and after it.  We rush into places that we need to go and never take time to rest and enjoy the holiday season.

I look forward to the days after the holidays when the parking lots of back to normal, the traffic is back to normal, and life can resume a comfortable, full life of friends and cooking and photography and play dates and doing nothing with my Mister.

Hope for 2014

The new year is upon us.  Goals are set.  Resolutions may be already broken!

I’ll be posting my goals (which I’m doing pretty good so far) in the coming days, but until then let me start off the year with this thought:

God’s grace is more than your goals.

We will all fail at our resolutions or goals.  We will eat sugar, gain weight some days, sleep in, press snooze, not write one day.  We will take bad pictures, fail to blog, be mean to someone, speed at some point, etc.  You get my point.  The cross says more than our goals.

Christmas craziness

I guess there is always one week that will make the holiday season rushed.

My husband had two concerts this week, we had two parties for our church and office. We are trying to get out of town for a Christmas weekend getaway.  I had several appointments for the boys.

But, we spent it with each other, with friends, and the weather was beautiful!

time management
I often wonder how so many bloggers I read actually have time to cook all the pretty food, take photos of it, live life and go out on dates and do ministry, read tons of books, and write too. Oh and stay physically fit, get sleep, and be. Oh, and not neglect their family or children.

Here are some time consuming reduction habits I need to implement:
1. I deleted all games off the ipad and my iphone

2. I need to hang up my clothes when I finish wearing them.

3. I need to start using my crockpot more.

4. I need to simplify my belongings. I learned this from JessLC over with her purging 100 things tasks. Started doing that before we were married. Now that our church as a share and swap – I have a huge pile of many boxes already begun for the spring event.

5. I need to unload the dishwasher at night when possible so it is cleaned out to be loaded with dirty ones the next day.

6. I love and will keep doing the majority of my laundry in one day.

7. I need to spend some part of my day reading – either beginning or end.
8. Organization is a big thing. We are working on cleaning out our walk-out attic (years before we turn it into a functional bedroom) and I need to get things organized so I quit spending time looking for stuff.

I actually think most of my time wasting is pure laziness, and that is not the habits of a Prov 31 industrious woman.
